Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial tissue that lines the uterus grows outside the uterus and eventually sheds into the abdominal cavity causing chronic pain, abnormal periods, and infertility.
A common question often asked is, “can I get pregnant with Endometriosis, and if so, how will it affect the pregnancy?”
To answer this question, Dr. Kothari provides some insight into what to expect.
Can I get pregnant with endometriosis?
Medical studies in 2014 found that whilst “endometriosis impairs fertility, it does not usually completely prevent conception.” The results concluded that 2 to 10 % of couples with endometriosis succeeded in becoming pregnant.
Even though some women may encounter fertility issues due to endometriosis, if it has affected the ovaries and fallopian tubes, the answer to the question is – yes, it is still a possibility to conceive without medical assistance.
How does endometriosis affect pregnancy?
The good news is many women go on to fall pregnant and have a healthy baby.
Some women may find that pregnancy relieves their endometriosis symptoms due to the rise in progesterone. This comes as no surprise as often in the treatment of endometriosis, hormone therapy Progestin is suggested to help relieve signs and symptoms.
Whilst knowing one can conceive, it’s essential to be aware that women with endometriosis have potentially higher chances of
- Preterm delivery – giving birth prematurely.
- Preeclampsia – a pregnancy complication characterised by high blood pressure.
- Placenta previa – where the placenta implants low in the uterus.
- Caesarean deliveries – delivery of the baby via what’s commonly known as a C-section.
- Miscarriage – spontaneous loss of a pregnancy before the 20th
After the baby is born, every woman’s experience will be different. For some, their symptoms will return, while others may find their symptoms have improved or resolved. Either way, it is recommended that you speak with your doctor about the ongoing care, management, and treatment of endometriosis.
