What to expect during prenatal care

Finding out that you or your partner is pregnant is such an exciting time. For those who are entering new territory, it can also trigger a number of questions and uncertainties about what to expect during pregnancy. Finding the right support is key to giving your baby the best start in life, which can be achieved through support networks such as prenatal classes and care. Prenatal care, also known as antenatal care, refers to the care you receive during pregnancy.

Your First Visit

Dr Kothari recommends pregnant women to book in an appointment with him as soon as possible, or when you are around 6-8 weeks pregnant. During this first visit, you can expect a general health check where your medical history will also be assessed. Dr Kothari encourages you to ask any questions that you have about your pregnancy, ranging from any symptoms you may have, to what to expect after giving birth. Dr Kothari will also use this time to create a prenatal program for you and your partner, scheduling in appointments for all important stages throughout your pregnancy.

Prenatal Care Appointments

Throughout your pregnancy, you will also be offered a number of other tests and scans to check up on your health, and the health of your developing baby. It is common for Dr Kothari to schedule between 8 to 10 prenatal care appointments, even if you are feeling well and are experiencing a healthy pregnancy.

Things that Dr Kothari is likely to cover during your prenatal care appointments depend on a number of factors, such as your health, any problems you may be experiencing, and any risks that may be present for your baby. Common topics include:

  • The different stages of pregnancy (trimesters, when the baby is due etc.)
  • Any scans or tests that can identify, prevent or reduce any risks
  • Medical and family history (general health, previous pregnancies etc.)
  • Which medications are safe
  • Cervical screening test (pap smear)
  • Your mental health during and post pregnancy
  • Any physical symptoms you may be experiencing
  • Blood and urine tests
  • Monitoring your baby’s development and heartbeat
  • Birthing plans, and what to do when something doesn’t go to plan
  • Weight management
  • Health and lifestyle
  • Work and home life
  • Postnatal care (breastfeeding etc.)

Vaccinations

Making sure your vaccinations are up to date is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your baby from contracting common infectious diseases such as measles, chickenpox, and whooping cough. Read up on what vaccinations are recommended before and during conception here.
