Robotic Surgery

What is a surgical robot?

Also called robot-assisted surgery, robotic surgery uses robotic technology to perform specific aspects of a surgical procedure – specifically, those requiring a high-degree of precision. In robotic surgery, the robot does not perform the surgery, instead Dr Kothari uses it as an instrument. A surgical robot uses very sophisticated computers and software, and because of their very high level of accuracy and precision, they’re associated with better outcomes compared to some types of traditional surgery.

Dr Kothari is the first and leading gynaecologist to use Da Vinci robotic assisted techniques in the Illawarra. Due to his extensive laparoscopic background, transitioning to robotic surgery came naturally. He is now sought out as an expert in the field, particularly in complicated cases, such as operating on large uteruses. Dr Kothari has performed over 300 Da Vinci robotic procedures to treat various conditions.

What benefits do robotic surgeries offer?

Similar to laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery use very small incisions, and the recovery period usually is faster and more comfortable, meaning most patients can get back to their regular routines much more quickly. Plus, smaller incisions mean less risk of infection and other complications. Because the incisions are so small, they’re often closed with surgical adhesives and covered with small bandages.

What is robotic surgery used for?

In gynaecology, robotic can be used for many different procedures, including

Will I need to stay in the hospital?

That depends on the type of procedure performed, but in most cases, minimally invasive gynaecology surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, so you can return home the same day you have your procedure. Dr Kothari will provide you with complete instructions on how to care for your incisions, what activities you can perform and which to avoid and any other information you need to ensure a successful recovery.

Will Dr Kothari use robotic surgery for my treatment?

This depends on a number of factors, including the type of procedure you’re having, your overall health, and whether these techniques offer the best approach for you. Dr Kothari will take the time to go into detail about which technique he will perform before your surgery is scheduled, so you will know what to expect.
